Carrier redesigns former Northwest gates in Terminal E

The smell of sawdust and new carpet was in the air at the two new Southwest Airlines gates at Logan Airport this week as the airline prepared to begin service to Chicago Midway and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall airports on Sunday.

Since June, the airline has been transforming the former Northwest Airlines area in Terminal E into a more open seating arrangement with easy chairs, yellow and blue poles, and a laptop station with bar stools.

Southwest is one of four airlines starting service out of Logan this year - along with Virgin America, Sun Country Airlines, and Porter Airlines, which starts flying to Toronto in September - a number Massachusetts Port Authority chief executive Thomas Kinton called “unprecedented.’’ Adding Southwest to the mix “will round out Logan in terms of now having every major carrier in the US,’’ he said.
