Isabelle English to create cupcake shop

Chef Todd English is helping his 16-year-old daughter tap into her creative side with a new cupcake shop on Beacon Hill.
Isabelle’s CurlyCakes, a name that plays off Isabelle English’s brown curly locks, is expected to open next month at 81 Charles St.
And Isabelle has been hands-on in the planning: designing the logo, helping to choose the shop’s colors and work on its design, and attending neighborhood association and Licensing Board meetings about the project with her mom, Olivia.
The shop will sell all-natural cupcakes, both sweet and savory. Isabelle, her parents and the pastry chef at her father’s Olives restaurant in Charlestown will brainstorm together about the products.
“You can kind of put your own personality into them as far as the decorating,” Isabelle said. “That’s what’s going to be different about our shop: Every cupcake will have its own personality.”
Isabelle has been interested in baking since she was 10, finding that following recipes and making up her own was relaxing and fun.
“My dad and I were in London this past spring and went to a cupcake store,” the Beaver Country Day School junior said. “That night at dinner, he started talking about it and kind of came up with the idea.”
English saw the new business as a good summer project for his daughter, who has worked at his Kingfish Hall restaurant at Faneuil Hall Marketplace and hangs out in the kitchen with him and his pastry chefs.
“We’re really pushing her to do everything,” he said. “It’s really an invaluable life experience, and it’s amazing how we’ve seen her grow over the summer. This is something that she’s really taken to and handled very maturely.”
Isabelle says she’s interested in the restaurant industry and will look at it as a career option.
“I was born into a kitchen and grew up in the business,” she said. “But I also have many other interests - photography, graphic design and a lot on the creative side. I’m also like a science nerd, so I’m really interested in biology and all that, too.”
