City approves two major projects in Southie

The Boston Redevelopment Authority approved two South Boston projects during its monthly board meeting Tuesday night.
The $23 million Eleven West project received approval to build a six-story building on what is now the boarded up Quiet Man pub, Reflex Lighting, and a parking lot. The 50 residential rental units (six of which will be affordable housing) will sit next to the Broadway MBTA stop on the Red Line. Construction is slotted to begin at the beginning of next year, with a completion date of spring 2012.
In Fort Point, Norwich Partners received approval to renovate an existing six-story Stillings Building at 368 Congress Street into a 120-room hotel. The hotel aims to draw traffic from the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and is a feather in the cap of Mayor Thomas Menino, who has declared the area an "Innovation District" in the hopes of making it a destination for new tech businesses. The $45 million restoration project of the century-old building will begin in April 2011.
