Four Seasons site formerly home to Playboy Club

With the recent launch of NBC's new series "The Playboy Club" The Boston Herald today has an interesting piece on Boston's Playboy Club which was located in Park Square.
The glory years for the swanky cocktail lounge — which operated from 1966 to 1977 where the Four Seasons Hotel stands today — were in the swinging ’60s, when patrons paid a whopping $25 for an exclusive Playboy key that granted them entre to the celebrity-studded living room, penthouse and Playmate bar areas.

The Four Seasons isn't the only hotel to occupy the spot of a former famous nightspot. The Radisson Boston Hotel sits on the site of the former Coconut Grove nightclub.

Casablanca in Harvard Square for sale

The Boston Business Journal reports today that popular Harvard Square restaurant Casablanca is up for sale.
A slow economy has played a role, of course, but Casablanca and other independent spots have suffered a hard time in the tony Cambridge, Mass. retail district surrounding Harvard University - ever since big-name stores began pushing up rents, and crowding out some of the smaller players.
Hopefully another dedicated person in the restaurant industry will purchase this spot and keep it running. I hope it does not become another bank!

Thanks to Universal Hub for the heads up on this!

Queen Elizabeth liner makes Boston port of call

The Queen Elizabeth, one of the newest luxury cruise ships in the world, arrived yesterday at Boston's recently renovated Black Falcon Cruise Terminal, marking its maiden voyage to Boston reports Boston.com.
The Queen Elizabeth’s owner, Cunard Line, has a long history with Boston. The city first hosted a Cunard vessel in 1840, when the shipping company made its inaugural trans-Atlantic voyage after winning a royal contract to deliver mail and passengers between England and America.

The cruise industry today brings to Massachusetts more than 330,000 visitors annually, including passengers and crew, who spend nearly $26 million in local restaurants, shops, and other tourist attractions, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. The cruise industry pumps even more money into the state: Last year, direct spending on ships’ provisions, labor, and other items totaled $492 million in Massachusetts.
I wonder when it departs as that would be a great time to head to Castle Island to view the ship as it leaves the harbor.

Some Boston Taxis still refuse plastic, face BPD's wrath

The Boston Herald reported several days ago on how some Boston taxi cabs are still refusing to take credit cards, nearly two years after a city rule was enacted requiring all Boston cabs to accept plastic.
“If you say to the cab driver, ‘Do you take credit cards?’ and the cab driver says anything but ‘Yes,’ I consider that to be a bit of coercion,” Cohen (Boston Police Hackney Chief) said. “In the end, I think passengers are to some degree intimidated . . . and I think that’s wrong.”

Boston taxi drivers do, in fact, profit from credit card transactions, Cohen noted. Card-processing fees are capped at 6 percent, and Cohen said those fees were factored into a 16-percent fare hike in 2009 to cover the cost of card readers and other business expenses such as gas price increases.

Personally if a cab driver refuses to take my credit card it basically means my cab ride is free. I also make note of the cab number and file a report with the Boston Police Hackney Division (either over the phone or online).

Meeting over proposed South End restaurant becomes contentious

South End Patch reports today about a passionate meeting of the Blackstone/Franklin Square Neighborhood Association Tuesday night that discussed Stella owner Evan Deluty's plan for a new Latin-themed restaurant at long vacant space at the corner of Washington and West Newton Streets. Deluty is seeking a letter from the association to support his application for a full liquor license for the proposed restaurant.
The sticking points leading to the most controversy on Tuesday were the restaurateur's' desire for a full liquor license, rather than a beer and wine license, and patio seating along the restaurant's side garden area, rather than seating on Washington St. The restaurateurs insisted that the restaurant must have a full license and patio seating in its side garden area if it is to go forth at all. Raised voices were the norm when these topics were brought up, and more than one person during the evening yelled in order to defend their position.

Just this past weekend, neighbor concerns led to the cancellation of a residential development that was to include another new restaurant, several blocks down Washington Street.

What do you think? Do neighborhood groups have too much power in Boston? Should a neighborhood be more welcoming when someone proposes a new development that could better the area?

In a letter Boloco CEO John Pepper cites the delay in the Green line extension project as one of the factors in the shops closing. A former Boloco employee, commenting on the original posting on the Medford Greenline Neighborhood Alliance website, says that decreased sales and the ineffectiveness of a delivery program at the location (not the Green line delay) were the major contributing factors in the decision to close.

Legal Harborside review

Devra First reviews Legal Harborside's second floor restaurant, one of three levels and atmosphere's at Legal's flagship location at Liberty Wharf.
The second-floor restaurant opened in May. It is decidedly different from every other Legal, propelled by a different kind of ambition. The chain has focused on consistency and value. This branch offers a boutique experience, for a price. Legal president and CEO Roger Berkowitz is on the cusp of 60 and shows no sign of slowing down. The restaurant is an I-have-arrived statement, designed to impress.

Prices establish that it’s geared toward a mature crowd. Entrees are in the $30s, $40s, and $50s. The fact that there is only one review of the second floor on Yelp as of press time speaks volumes.

South End restaurant developement put off

South End Patch reports today that the proposed redevelopment of the Hite Radio and TV building on Washington Street in the South End has been put off for now due to concerns from neighbors about the project's size. The development was to include condos and a new upscale restaurant. The South End News also has an extensive piece on the cancellation of the redevelopment plans.
"Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to work with you and other neighbors in the community, we have been unable to reconcile the scale of our proposed project with the direct abutters," the two wrote in an email to residents. "The lack of consensus ... has led us to the realization that we cannot build an economically viable building at the site with such significant opposition from the abutters."

Chocolate Bar returns to Langham Hotel this Saturday

The Chocolate Bar at The Langham Hotel's Cafe Fleuri, one of Boston's most delicious culinary experiences, returns for the season this Saturday September 10th.

This all you can eat chocolate buffet is not to be missed. There are chocolate cookies, brownies, cakes, drinks, shakes, crepes, the Langham chocolate croissant bread pudding, truffles, cotton candy, whoopie Pies, and even bacon flavored chocolate. Last fall I had the pleasure of enjoying the buffet with several friends from out of town and was truly an amazing experience. It's good to note that you can also order off of the regular Cafe Fleuri menu as well. Someone at the table next to us was eating a burger along with all of the chocolate.

The Chocolate Bar is open every Saturday (September - June) from 11am to 3pm. One definitely wants to allot several hours to this experience so an 11am or 1pm seating usually works the best. Adults are $40, children five-twelve years old are $28, and children 4 and under are free. The prices are subject to change for holidays and special events.

The Palm eyes move from Westin Hotel

Boston Restaurant Talk reports today that The Palm is looking to leave its space at the Westin Copley Hotel, though the timetable is not certain. The Palm opened its Copley Square location in 1996. I wouldn't be surprised to see the restaurant move somewhere near the waterfront or in the Seaport District. Wherever The Palm ends up I hope its great bartenders, especially Phil, go with it.

Boston Convention Center expansion plans detailed

The Boston Globe reported this past Friday on new details of the proposed expansion of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC), recently recommended to the Legislature. The Globe report mentions locations of proposed new hotels near the BCEC, and a revitalization of the surrounding parking lots with a variety of shopping and entertainment options. Building more hotels within walking distance of the center, including a proposed 1000 room headquarters hotel, is a critical part of the expansion plans. The question of how much public funding is needed to support such an expansion and how it could be structured will be considered by the Legislature.
Before any bill is proposed or debated, he said, lawmakers will need to know exactly how much public money will be required to fund the expansion. So far, officials have offered a menu of options that includes diverting existing hotel tax revenue, borrowing against future revenue to be generated by the expansion, and increasing taxes on rental cars, taxis, and other tourist services in the Boston area.

Storyville preview

The Boston Globe's Christopher Muther previews Storyville, the new club set to open September 9th at the Copley Square Hotel. Storyville replaces Saint which occupied the space for a nearly a decade.
Saint was completely gutted for the renovation. The formerly slick “nitery’’ - as Lesser dubbed it when it first opened almost a decade ago - is now a retro-flavored space that has been divided into two separate rooms. The first room, referred to as the Bordello Room, is a nod to the origin of the name Storyville, the notorious red light district of New Orleans.

Karl's Rant opens at Zuzu

A sandwich spot called Karl's Rant is now open in Central Square, operating out of Zuzu in The Middle East restaurant/music complex. Lunch service began today, with a grand opening coming on September 3rd. Daily brunch, a special weekend brunch, and a full bar will also be offered either inside or on the patio. Karl's Rant will be open Monday-Friday from 8am-3pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 9am-3pm.
The name of the shop is derived from a 3am rant from our chef, who has worked in the restaurant industry since he was 15. Said rant was about how a restaurant should BE, how the food should BE and the mutual companionship that should exist between the staff and customer and the community. This eatery represents who we are and what we like to eat and how we like to play. When you come here, you are amongst the best of unexpected friends (the kind that bring you food). We represent humor, kindness, sardonic wit, charm, comfort and, best of all, a passionate need to receive consistent adulation for our menu. Delicious, sometimes pretentious, always fresh: baked, butchered, shaved, roasted, toasted, grilled, fried, sauteed, spread, sliced, diced, dried, smoked, cracked, caramelized, whipped, braised, brined, marinated...Effort in every bite. Accept no substitutions...we don't...(Karl's Rant Facebook Page)
